On a night apart from recent times,
I’m back in my old bed,
under the woven white blanket
stitched with the faded blue outline of Mickey Mouse.
The covered walls flex their muscle.
On a poster, Batman outwits the Joker.
In another, a football player
is hitting his ancient stride.
Cricket ball on the dresser
where a mouth guard would usually be.
An old school uniform in the closet.
And not one grey suit in sight.
For this strange sleep,
I’m the overgrown child
shrinking back into a distant shape,
my body fitted with Superman sheets.
I have this recurring dream
where I fly above the Earth.
But tonight, I’ll have the S on my chest.
Tonight, a cape will flare out behind me.
