FRIDAY NOTES & NEWS: Flash Fiction Week 2026 Contest Open

HOPE YOU all enjoyed the winners of our Poetry contest last week. We’re just going to go straight on to our Flash Fiction Week 2026 contest, which opens today. We are looking for flash stories of any genre but with a hard maximum word count of 500. Simultaneous submissions are allowed. As well, you can submit stories previously published elsewhere. And you can enter more than once—but please only one story per submission.

Submission window: May 19 – June 1, 2026. Our top five winners will be posted on the CommuterLit homepage the week of June 15-19, 2026 and receive cash prizes:

First-place: CAD$100

Second-place: CAD$50

(3) Runners-up: CAD$25

There is a CAD$4 admin fee per submission—this helps keep the contest running.

Drabble for the Month of June

And the Drabble of the Month for June will be posted Friday, June 5 — which means we’ll be choosing the winning drabble the week of May 25 – 29. If you want to be in contention, please submit your drabbles (100-word stories) to the contest now!

Summer Schedule

We believe in a good work-life balance, so we take summers off. That means it’s business as usual until Friday, June 26, after which we won’t be sending out the weekly Substack newsletter or posting on the home page until Tuesday, Sept. 8 (though occasionally we will be posting Notes and sending Chat messages).

The submission portals remain open throughout the summer, but do not expect an answer from us until the Fall.
