THURSDAY: The Owl

we see you
when you show up,
startling

mistaking you
at first for
part of the tree

silhouette

a temporary visitor

deigning to come in
from the shadows

to remind us we live
so close to royalty

we scramble for cameras,
binoculars, and other people

to share in the
window-staring

only to drag them over
and find in that brief flash of
not-looking

you’re gone

now just a dream symbol
to obsess over
we keep
searching for you

when will we see you again?
