WEDNESDAY: Don’t Fix Me

BY FLORENCE NIVEN

the winter birds

accompanying us
through

this wilderness

broke
the silence

offering morsels
of

birdsong
distinguishing features
habitats

upon which to feed —

our conversation
skirting the edge of

misunderstanding

don’t fix me
she’d said

when it was obvious
to me

I was the one
in need of

fixing

but if I picked
at that thread

I risked
unravelling

until I was no more
