THURSDAY: Summer Solstice

the longest day
travels the fastest
from blinking start
to drifting, lingering end

points
to hazy time

I’ve been waiting all year to say
to this one moment:
“it’s too hot”

let’s dip into that shady spot
by the tree, a cool cave
besieged by bugs

such stinging sweetness
marks this shortest span

on the spinning wheel

that starts the summer
season we get to live

over and over again,
if we are lucky
