Folded in night’s drape
we combat the morning,
counting stars through
shutterless windows until
they fall swiftly to earth,
creasing canvases of sky
with careful brushstrokes
that carry new heavens.

The promises we make
crater into themselves in
the unforgiving light of
day, crumpling shards of
scribble-ridden foolscap
whose meaning melts into
grim pools of dusty words,
ponds of forgotten vowels.

New night beckons with
whispers of fresh moons,
crisp constellations, and
a sky full of yellow-eyed
owls. Until then we bleed
the day dry, dream of
shadow-drenched sheets
that ache to fold us again.
