I HAVE a confession to make — one which often elicits a gasp among fellow readers and writers. I read the beginning of a novel, then I skip ahead to read the ending, and then I read the stuff in the middle. I usually read every word, but always out of order.
I know, I know—for some people that’s sacrilegious. In my defence, I say it’s because I’m a writer and am mostly interested in how the author gets from point A to B (which is true). But, truthfully, I’ve always read books that way. I’m impatient. I don’t like to be held in suspense for too long and I enjoy the comfort of a tidy ending.
But mostly I don’t think of books as precious items to be consumed with strict etiquette. I dog-ear them. I crack the spine. I scribble in the margins. I pitch them across the room on occasion. I always have multiple books on the go. And I read across genres and styles. I devour books like an uncouth slob.
I don’t like ebooks or listen to audiobooks. I am totally a print person.
What about you? What are your reading habits? Do you have to finish a book once you pick it up? Or do you dip in and out of them at will, or abandon them if they don’t capture you right away? As a writer, can you still read for pleasure — or are you reading mostly to hone your craft? Can you turn your critical mind off? Can you still be moved to tears or laughter?
