may include individual reactions
to a variety of possible scenarios

such as:

a full eclipse of the sun some
five thousand years ago;

buzzards circling patiently above
the final head raise of a fallen beast;

rising waters relentlessly eroding
sands on a tiny tropical island beach;

a mother’s parched and wordless lips
hovering over her child’s distended belly;

hurled, hurtful words that slice through air
before the resounding slamming of doors;

the first sounding of the E major chord
concluding the Beatles “A Day in the Life”;

the initial sighting of a crocus cresting
a melting blanket of winter white;

a slow closing of eyes shuttering the world
before the last exhalation of breath;

the period at the end of this line
