MONDAY: Makin’ Babies

“Makin’ babies tonight!” I whisper
“But you had that proced —”
I put a finger to your lips
and hussssh, nothing can come
between us and our babies.
Let’s defy the laws of sterilization
and minor outpatient surgery
to have us a night of creation
and sex, of course. We can’t forget
to have the sex. Let’s not discuss
the babies we’ll never have
and make them, over and over
every night like we’re young
and trying to wake the neighbours.
“They’re makin’ babies up in there”
they’ll say in wonder before
phoning in a noise complaint,
so hussssh, maybe we’ll not let
the policeman come to interrupt
what we do tonight. At least for tonight
let’s forget the hospital and cold
rooms and hands taking creation
away and focus instead on just
makin’ babies the way the young
focus on making love.
