Fergus Patrick Egan was born in 1945 in Donegal in the northwest of Ireland. His childhood home was a small village at the Donegal / Fermanagh border between the Irish Free State (later the Republic of Ireland) and Northern Ireland. He spent summers with his paternal grandparents in Mayo. While employed as a banker he lived in 10 different areas, where he observed and absorbed the cultural peculiarities of urban and rural communities in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. He currently resides in Ontario, Canada.
