THURSDAY: Gone, but Not Forgotten

I remember wanting to forget you
But now, as you blend into Adam’s earth
I’m afraid I’m forgetting to remember

the night I called to you after you left,
At age eleven I cursed your name,
And I remember wanting to forget

that you returned to me, held me
With those same familiar hands,
A touch that I’m forgetting to remember.

I looked out my bedroom window
Into the darkness to watch you leave again
And I remember wanting to forget

the face I saw staring back at me,
Out of the darkness, my eyes,
The look I’m forgetting to remember

when I needed you and you chose
To quench your thirst, over me.
Though I remember wanting to forget you
I’m afraid I’m forgetting to remember.
