WEDNESDAY: My White Shoes
Copyright is held by the author.
White shoes with the insides out
Sensible flats for a lawn party
Something I could wear again
that would take the day-to-day living,
that expanded round my feet comfortable like.
A little scuff, a little scratch
made them less white
Incrementally
You didn’t notice
One day I looked down and they were tattered
These white shoes I bought for my wedding,
I am throwing them out today.
There’s something ominous going on here:
A little scuff, a little scratch
made them less white
Incrementally
You didn’t notice
Left me with a real sense of unease….and then out go the shoes….You say so much with so few words. I’m left hoping the marriage didn’t go out too, but afraid for it.
Effective poem. I’m guessing it’s a metaphor for the decline of marriage.
